Marbling is a characteristic of postmortem decomposition associated with bacterial gas formation and swelling of the body. It is produced by hemolysis of blood in vessels with the reaction of hemoglobin and hydrogen sulfide and the development of greenish-black discoloration of the vessels.

Jan Palach was a Czeh student who committed suicide on 16 January 1969 by self-immolation in protest at the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. Jan Palach and a group of other students had made a suicide pact, but the rest backed out of the pact once the well-publicised pleas Palach made on his deathbed described the degree of pain they faced.

Cane Hill was an insane asylum in Croydon, London in use until 1991 when – by all appearances – everyone just got up and walked out. Some of the inmates were transferred to other secure locations but the hospital, and much of the medical apparatus still remains.

A German girl is overcome as she walks past the exhumed bodies of some of the 800 slave workers murdered by SS guards near Namering, Germany, and laid here so that townspeople may view the work of their Nazi leaders.

Frederik Ruysch
In the mid-14th century when the printing press was invented, medical illustration became a collaborative effort between anatomists and artists; the anatomist commonly being the artist. Since the camera had not existed then, copper plate etchings were used to create highly visualized and detailed records of the human body. This Frederik Ruysch print is a revered favorite. The cradling of flesh between the womb and infant is almost all too photo-realistic; the exquisite skills of these artists should not be forgotten.
